The Transport Group provides specialist services to the
transport industry, both locally and nationally, and their
insurers on both contentious and non-contentious matters.
Our clients currently include some of the largest transport
companies in the United Kingdom, including those active in air cargo operations as well as the logistics industry.
Recent work has included the drafting of several multi-million
pound trans-European logistics contracts. Prettys acted
for CEL in its successful seven figure claim against Nedlloyd
Lines UK Limited, in which the decision of Mr Justice Andrew
Smith at first instance was upheld unanimously by the Court
of Appeal [2003 EWCA Civ 1716 and the supplemental judgment
of 18 December 2003].
Prettys are members of UKWA, the Institute of Transport & Logistics
and the Association of Average Adjusters.
We have specialist knowledge in dealing specifically with
transport law and CMR disputes
Roland Sharp is listed as a national expert in Chambers and Partners, A Client's Guide to the Legal Profession 2007, which records that he "leads the 11 strong team and is rated as an "impressive technical lawyer'." The publication also states, "Transport is one of the continuing growth areas for this Ipswich-based firm. Its proximity to Felixstowe, Harwich and Ipswich docks is a plus for many clients. The group has close connections with senior management for local operators and links to a network of overseas transport organisations, taking on CMR work for those in the Benelux and Scandinavian countries in particular. It is also frequently instructed by insurers on
transport-related claims."
The Legal 500 2006 states: Prettys handles corporate and commercial work for a large number of commercial road haulage clients in Felixstowe. It has also recently advised on substantial litigation over the definition of a trailer, and advised on a cabotage arrangement. Clients say that they are 'very satisfied' with the work of Paul Dickie and Dinesh Dorai Raj.
Prettys always try to go that extra mile and to that end
we aim to provide a comprehensive service to our transport
clients in the various areas which are of particular relevance
to the transport industry. For example, Prettys has devised
an on-line debt recovery facility. Our services include
recoveries, dispute resolution (with specialist expertise in the carriage of goods by air under the Warsaw and Montreal Conventions), drafting bespoke terms and
conditions, corporate advice in relation to buying and selling
businesses, and advice on shipping as well as pure transport
matters, employment law (including tax implications) and
commercial property.
