Brexit confusion remains biggest concern for businesses in 2017

Confusion about the legal implications of Brexit are the biggest cause of concern for businesses according to a recent survey by law firm Prettys.

The survey, conducted by Prettys at our employment law update events in Ipswich and Chelmsford, asked business leaders what the biggest issues for 2017 would be. 27% named Brexit as the main concern, followed by the National Living Wage (17%) and Gender Pay Gap Reporting (12%). Other issues included inflation, pensions, data protection and TUPE.

When questioned on the topic of Brexit, 36% of those that replied* cited the lack of clarity on the legal precedents as the biggest issue, followed by the falling value of the pound (24%) and immigration (21%).

Commenting on the results, our head of employment law, Kelly Sayers said; “Despite almost six months since the leave result, businesses are still none the wiser on what the legal implications on their business will be. With so many complicated issues around immigration, the value of the pound and wider trade agreements, it is clear that more information is needed to allow businesses to prepare themselves for the future.”

When asked about the main issues that HR departments deal with on a day to day basis, sickness and incapacity topped the list followed by misconduct/ conflict resolution and recruitment.
