Cambridge/Milton Keynes/Oxford Corridor – room for development

November 2017 - Issue 99

The Cambridge/Milton Keynes/Oxford arc (‘the Arc’) has been highlighted as an area of importance due to its “world-class research, innovation and technology” which can help the UK “prosper in a changing global economy”.

In November 2017 the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) published a report on the new deal between government and the local areas to encourage housing and transport developments within the Arc to ensure prosperity is not put at risk.

2 Key points made within the report are:

The deal between the Government and local government provides for the Government to focus on the new transport infrastructure and for local government to focus on house building. The Government has followed the NIC’s report by preparing “Helping the Cambridge, Milton Keynes and Oxford corridor reach its potential”, setting out an “initial package of infrastructure investment, planning and development measures”. The government invites the region to fully support the efforts to implement a strategy to stimulate economic growth and acknowledgments from the NIC’s report that an integrated approach between the Government and local government is required to meet the areas full economic potential. The government will respond fully to the NIC report within 6-12 months.
