The Construction Industry (Protection of Cash Retentions) Bill

May 2017 - Issue 93

The Construction Industry (Protection of Cash Retentions) Bill 2017 has been introduced to Parliament. Although the text of the Bill is yet to be published, it aims to curb abuse of retentions in the construction industry.

However, the Bill is doomed to be pushed into the long grass due to the fact it was introduced as a Private Members Bill under the Ten Minute Rule on 26 April 2017. Whilst it was due to have its second reading on 12 May 2017, as Parliament has now been dissolved in advance of the general election, the Bill will fall and no further action will be taken on it.

As Alan Brown MP put it, “I genuinely hoped it was going to be the start of new legislation, but unfortunately Mrs May was apparently so scared of what I was proposing that she called a general election!”
